Commemorating the Armistice of World War I

November 11, 2018, marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War I. It is an occasion that encourages reflection and provides motivation to strive for a peaceful future. Composers call on us to do the same with their music—to praise the victorious, honor victims and to heal and lift the spirit. The CSOA recognizes this significant anniversary by presenting programs and special events at Symphony Center and across Chicago that explore themes of peace and reflection with timeless works from the classical repertoire.

 

These programs are presented with leadership support from Colonel (IL) Jennifer N. Pritzker, IL ARNG (Retired), president and founder, Pritzker Military Foundation and the President and CEO of TAWANI Enterprises, Inc.

A Time for Reflection: CSO concerts commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI
With Marin Alsop conducting the CSO, this program features the world premiere Threnos by composer Bruno Mantovani, commissioned by the CSO and the Pritzker Military Foundation along with Copland’s Third Symphony with the iconic Fanfare for the Common Man theme.

A free lecture, open to all ticketholders, by the foremost scholar on the Star Spangled Banner Mark Clague and Phillip Huscher, will precede the concert.

Exhibit: A Time for Reflection—A Message of Peace
A companion exhibit—curated by the Rosenthal Archives of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in collaboration with the Pritzker Military Museum & Library—will be on display in Symphony Center’s first-floor rotunda from October 2 through November 18.

Lecture: A Time for Reflection—A Message of Peace
Hosted by and presented at Glessner House (1800 South Prairie Ave., Chicago, IL) this event features Frank Villella, Director of the Rosenthal Archives of the CSO, who will examine how events before, during, and after the Great War affected the Orchestra and its members, along with the greater Chicago community.
