The Chicago Symphony Orchestra has recorded each of Brahms’s four symphonies multiple times and also has recorded the complete cycle on three different occasions. Former music directors Sir Georg Solti and Daniel Barenboim along with Ravinia Festival music director James Levine each recorded the complete cycle. Additionally, music directors Frederick Stock, Rafael Kubelík, and Fritz Reiner, along with principal guest conductor Carlo Maria Giulini and guest conductor Günter Wand each led recordings of individual symphonies with the Orchestra.
