Anthology of Fantastic Zoology was recorded live in 2015, at the conclusion of Mason Bates’ five-year tenure as Mead Composer-in-Residence of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra with Anna Clyne. Bates dedicated the work to Riccardo Muti, and it evokes a series of creatures “familiar and unknown,”
as Bates says, which he calls “a kind of psychedelic Carnival of the Animals.”
