Since the Chicago Symphony’s first performances of Mahler’s Ninth Symphony in April 1950 under the baton of guest conductor George Szell, the Orchestra has recorded the work under Carlo Maria Giulini, Sir Georg Solti, and Pierre Boulez, and performed it under Sir John Barbirolli, Daniel Barenboim, James Conlon, Lawrence Foster, Bernard Haitink, Michiyoshi Inoue, James Levine, Rafael Kubelík, Hans Rosbaud, and Michael Tilson Thomas.
