Ahead of the second concert Feb. 17 at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Chicago Symphony Orchestra musicians participated in master classes, sampled local cuisine and toured the campus. Then it was back to historic Memorial Hall to join Riccardo Muti for the final concert of the East Coast Tour 2018: a program of the overture to Verdi’s I vespri siciliani, Samuel Adams’ many words of love and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2.

The Chapel Hill concerts were presented by Carolina Performing Arts, which also booked a recital Feb. 18 by CSO cello Katinka Kleijn in contemporary works, including MusicNOW commissions by Marcus Balter and Pauline Oliveros.

During the second half of the Feb. 17 concert, Maestro Muti recognized CSO bass Roger Cline for his 45 years of service to the orchestra. A native of Tacoma, Wash., Cline joined the CSO in 1973 after three years in the U.S. Army Special Forces Band at West Point Military Academy.
