For the final performances on their East Coast Tour 2018, Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra headed to Chapel Hill for two concerts Feb. 16-17, presented by Carolina Performing Arts, at historic Memorial Hall on the campus of the University of North Carolina.

For the first concert, the CSO and Muti offered Stravinsky’s Scherzo fantastique, Higdon’s Low Brass Concerto (with soloists Jay Friedman, Michael Mulcahy, Charles Vernon and Gene Pokorny), Chausson’s Poème de l’amour et de la mer (with mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine) and Four Sea Interludes from Britten’s opera Peter Grimes.

In addition to the tour concerts, CSO cello Katinka Kleijn will appear in a recital Feb. 18, also presented by Carolina Performing Arts, in which she will perform two CSO-commissioned works, Marcos Balter’s shadows of listening and Pauline Oliveros’ For Two or Three Instruments. Both works were originally commissioned for the CSO’s MusicNOW contemporary music series.
