Conductor Salonen and cellist Ma join together for Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto, a work Ma performed for the first time when he was 19. The web interview below with him goes into more detail. Salonen leads works by himself, Beethoven and Lutosławski. The CSO gave the premiere of Lutosławski’s Third Symphony with Sir George Solti in 1983, and Salonen talks about the immense, immediate popularity the work had in Europe after that performance in the interview, and how a bootleg CD of the radio broadcast was a very hot commodity.
