Let Mr. Peltz have this to put in the paper if he cares to “THEY SAID WE WERE GOING OVER THE OCEAN” (TUNE: MY BONNIE LIES OVER THE OCEAN.) A little ditty of disguist composed by members of the 54th Photographic Section, Air Service, U.S. Army, on the evening of November 12th, 1918, on board a long Island R.R. train enroute to the Air Service Depot, Garden City, L.I., N.Y. from Long Island City, N.Y. just after having disembarked from H.M.T. Empress of Russia. They boarded the transport two days before thinking that after their training of almost a yer they were at last to be rewarded with a trip to the front and be allowed to work on the front. They said we were going over the ocean; They said we were going over the sea. They said we were going over the ocean. But it’s back to Long Island for me. Back to, back to, back to Long Island for me, for me. Back to, back to, back to Long Island for me. The ship was the Empress of Russia, She started to pull out to sea, When somebody signed an armistice, It was back to Long Island for me. Back to, back to, back to Long Island for me, for me. Back to, back to, back to Long Island for me. The breakfast they gave us was rotten, The dinner was much worse to me, But when those Chinks brought out the supper, It was back to Long Island for me. Back to, back to, back to Long Island for me, for me. Back to, back to, back to Long Island for me. They stuck us way down in the steerage, They put us in compartment “C”, They hung us all up in a hammock, And the cooties crawled all over me. Back to, back to, back to Long Island for me, for me. Back to, back to, back to Long Island for me. They started us out on the ferry, They started us back on the train, They filled us so full of their B----S----, We came back to Long Island again. Back to, back to, back to Long Island for me, for me. Back to, back to, back to Long Island for me. Edward A. Pollock 54th Photo Sec |
