Answering the Call is an online exhibition of digital images of World War I posters held in Milner Library’s Government Documents World War Poster Collection. These historic posters were created by federal agencies and national organizations after the United States entered the war in 1917. They vividly illustrate the many demands and needs of a global war. The most effective posters quickly informed and successfully compelled citizens to support the war effort with such activities as contributing to Victory Loan drives, knitting socks for the Red Cross, donating books and magazines to soldiers, sponsoring orphans overseas, or conserving food and fuel.
The original posters were collected and preserved by Ange V. Milner, the university's first full-time librarian, and are now housed in the Government Documents unit on the fourth floor of Milner Library. Please contact the Government Documents Librarian to view the print posters.
